Thank you, Grimmie, for the defense.
I believe that, in the very ancient times, Laurelen did, if fact, wear elf ears, but after he came out into the Kingdom, he soon stopped -- at least this was the rumor. A very strange man, Laurelen. And if one offended him, the person was put on his "List."
I found my way onto that list, and soon after, found myself literally shoved out of his way (after he had demanded my Society boss fire me because I had fired his friend who had been disregarding Kingdom regs for five years (I was KMoS at the time).
So, Grimmund is right. I do have Old Timers' Disease, and do look back fondly at a simpler era in the Society.
So, once again, I apologize to those offended.

This much is largely true, in an organizational sense.

This is the part where people will take issue. :)
I can remember when the CoA's main job was simply to register what was
submitted. Tolkien elvish and dwarvish were acceptable languages for
submissions, and documentation was minimal.
There has been a steady, consistent, incremental drive over the last
20-30 to make the SCA more authentically medieval, and less fantastic,
in part, in an attempt to gain credibility with real specialists in
medieval history. That has slowly but consistently changed the flavor
of the SCA over that time. If you've been along for the ride, and
paying attention, those changes may or may not have caught your
attention. How much of a good thing they are, though, is mostly a
matter of personal opinion.
Auntie Bronwyn, I suspect, fondly remembers the good old days of
minimal documentation and a greater emphasis on 'fun' than on
'authenticity'. I recommend going back and looking at some of the
early registrations, or reading lists of early Midrealm royalty
looking for blatantly fantasy or joke names.
(much like how autocrats and feastocrats have become 'event stewards'
and 'feast stewards'.... I don't know that Laurelin Darksbane ever
wore elf ears on the thrones, but it wouldn't surprise me, much.)
The SCA is a highly mutable organization. If you leave some aspect of
it, and come back several years later, you'll find things may have
changed considerably. If you didn't expect it, it can be an awful
shock. The college of arms is an excellent example of this, as it has
consistently and steadily raised the threshold for registration
throughout its existence, both via revisions of the official rules and
via precedents.
