I see that Marshfield is only about 120 miles from Madison -- definitely in the 'day-trip' range for me, even for an evening. If you would like assistance settling in, let me know.
As to what to pack, you may have just missed the last frost (or not -- it's still too early to tell). I would expect that Marshfield is quite a bit different from Dallas, or Stillwater; think Ardmore or Lubbock -- substituting corn, dairy cows and snow for oil wells, beef cattle and dust storms.
